Title: Narrative Group Therapy with Children with Depressive Symptoms Lecture

Presenter: ALEJANDRA TRUJILLO-AREVALO

Description: Alejandra Trujillo-Arevalo, will present a lecture-style workshop titled Cognitive Behavioral/Narrative Treatment for Children with Depressive Symptoms. In her presentation, Trujillo-Arevalo will outline an approach she developed, published, and piloted in Mexico. Quite successful, the group treatment has been enhanced and adapted for the U.S. population, and will be introduced in America in the near future.

Attendees will learn about the theoretical model that provides structure for the group, the 31 techniques that constitute the treatment, and the sequencing of the group techniques to clusters, such as affective education, relaxation training, problem solving, and social skills training. In addition, Trujillo-Arevalo will help attendees understand the general principles for designing a psycho-educational group and shine light on cultural issues and research outcomes to be considered when implementing such groups.

Speaker Bio: Alejandra Trujillo-Arevalo is a licensed psychologist in Mexico who specializes in working with children and trauma. She developed an evidence-informed school-based, group treatment for children with depressive symptoms, Manual para el Tratamiento Psicológico de Niños con Síntomas Depresivos, which she evaluated as part of research at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The group program will be published in Spanish by Editorial El Manual Moderno in 2012, and she is currently adapting it for use with American populations.

At present, she is completing her master’s degree in counseling with a specialization in marriage and family therapy at California State University, Northridge (expected graduation, December 2011). While at CSUN, Alejandra has worked with Diane Gehart, PhD, with whom she is co-authoring the Instructor’s Manual for Theory and Treatment Planning in Counseling and Psychotherapy.

She is currently working at the Valley Trauma Center in Los Angeles, providing psychotherapy for adult, teen and child survivors of sexual assault, and provides therapy for their families, as well. She also works at El Centro de Amistad (the Friendship Center), providing counseling in Spanish and facilitating mental health support groups at L.A. family Housing Center, a transitional living center. She has presented her treatment at numerous professional international conferences.
